Description
A duet of classics reaches a festive peak in this new arrangement by Matthew R. Putnam. An unusually effective melodic pairing, this new work will be a perfect fit for Christmastime programs.
For Christians around the world, the Christmas season is a time in which they celebrate the birth of Jesus, the tiny baby who would grow into a man who would save humanity through great sacrifice. One popular holiday carol that depicts Christ’s birth is “Away in a Manger,” the familiar soft, lilting, lullaby-like tune that evokes the peaceful nativity scene surrounding the newborn baby as he rests in the manger. In writing “A Christmas Lullaby,” I wanted to combine this classic carol with another well-loved and recognized piece, Brahms’ “Lullaby” (also known as “Cradle Song”). Johannes Brahms wrote “Lullaby” as a gift for his dear friend Bertha Faber after the birth of her son, as a song for her to sing him to sleep. Since it was written, the melody of “Lullaby” has soothed generations of little ones. While the holiday season can often be exciting, bright, and dizzying, I hope that you are able to find some peace, slowness, and comfort in this gentle combination of these two beloved songs.
