I’ve created two adaptable instrumentation versions of Dusk.
The FOUR-PART VERSION can be played by almost any combination of four instruments, regardless of register and timbre. Parts included: C, Bb, F, Eb, in treble, alto, and bass clefs for strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. See below for the full part list.
The FIVE-PART VERSION is a slightly stricter arrangement following the Japanese All-Band Association’s flexible band requirements, and requires at least one player from each of the following categories:
1. Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Trumpet, Violin
2. Clarinet in Bb, Trumpet in Bb, Eb Alto Sax, Violin
3. Clarinet in Bb, Bb Tenor Sax, Eb Alto Sax, Horn in F, Violin, Viola
4. Bb Tenor Sax, Horn in F, Trombone, Euphonium, Bassoon, Cello
5. Bass Clarinet, Trombone, Euphonium, Bassoon, Eb Baritone Sax, Tuba, Cello, String Bass
Both versions include optional Piano/Guitar, Timpani, Vibraphone, and Percussion (SC, CC, BD) parts.
Original Program Note:
This simple, chorale-like work captures the reflective calm of dusk, paradoxically illuminated by the fiery hues of sunset. I’m always struck by the dual nature of this experience, as if witnessing an event of epic proportions silently occurring in slow motion. Dusk is intended as a short, passionate evocation of this moment of dramatic stillness.
